Warm days, light nights, and high fuel costs mean there’s never been a better time to try cycling to work. It will help you save money and get fitter, all while enjoying the fresh air.
How it works
If you work for Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council or North Tees Hospital, you can loan a bike for free from the Active Travel Hub for up to 4 weeks, so you can give cycling to work a trial run before deciding whether to buy your own bike. We’ll help you every step of the way, with advice about what to wear, which route to take, what kind of bike you need, and we can even lend you a lock and pannier bags too.
You don’t have to ride every day (just the sunny ones!), and you’re welcome to use the bike for other journeys too.
If you decide you want to continue cycling then we can help you find a bike of your own – but there’s absolutely no obligation to buy anything.
FAQs
Can I keep the bike for longer than a month?
Ideally not, as there may be other people waiting to loan the bike after you. We’ll do our best to be flexible though.
Can I buy the bike at the end of the loan?
No. We don’t sell anything at the Hub, but we can point you towards some great local bike shops, and advise you on what kind of bike is best for your needs.
Will I receive a new bike?
No, it will be a used bike, but it will be in full working order
What if the bike breaks?
We can’t come and rescue you on the day, but we’ll come out and fix / replace the bike at a later date.
How do I get the bike?
You’ll need to collect the bike from us at 147 High Street, Stockton, TS18 1PL
What should I wear?
We’ll chat to you about clothing, but our general opinion is you shouldn’t need any specialist kit just to ride to work!
Which route should I take?
We’ll make you a map route which shows the best way to ride to work
Where should I store the bike?
In a secure location where it won’t be rained on
