Volunteering

The greatest strength of the Hub is the fantastic team of volunteers we have. They help us to deliver guided walks and rides, teach maintenance classes, recycle bikes back to life, show people how to cycle safely on roads, and help to keep the Hub running behind the scenes.

If you want to meet new people, help those in your community, and keep fit and active, then volunteering with the Hub will be right up your street. We’re a friendly and enthusiastic bunch, and we’re always looking for others to join us. Have a look below:

Walk Leader

Here at the Hub we help to change people’s lives by getting them walking in fun, friendly, supportive group walks. We’re looking for volunteers to help lead new weekly walks in certain areas of our borough.

If more people in Stockton can attend a group walk then it means less social isolation, greater wellbeing, and reduced health problems.

The purpose of our walks are to be short and relaxed, so that everyone is able to join in. It’s not about walking as far or as fast as possible – just helping people in their community to connect with the places around them, and with one another.

You don’t need to be a “walking expert” yourself – just physically able, and keen to meet and help new people. Age isn’t a barrier!

Walks work best when they happen at the same time every week, so being able to commit to a specific time is ideal. You’re allowed to go on holiday though!

We will provide:

  • High quality walk leader training
  • First aid training
  • Public liability insurance
  • Help to plan and risk assess routes
  • Advertising and promotion for your walk (so it reaches the right people)
  • Any kit you need

Benefits include:

  • Meeting like-minded local people
  • Learning more about the local area
  • Seeing your guidance benefit people’s health, wellbeing and enjoyment of walking
  • Being a Sustrans volunteer gives you access to a wide network of events, training and opportunities

If you’re curious and would like to chat about the role or the project in general, just get in touch:

  • Pop in and say hi at The Hub, 147 High Street, Stockton, TS18 1PL
  • Give us a call at 01642 617 672

Ride Marshall

Here at the Hub we help to change people’s lives by getting them cycling in fun, friendly and supported group rides. We’re on the lookout for volunteer riders to help lead the way and support these new cyclists.

The Hub was the UK’s first Active Travel Centre, and for 10 years we’ve been making walking and cycling easy and accessible for local people. We lead short guided bike rides around Stockton-on-Tees, so that those with little knowledge or ability can begin cycling in a friendly and safe environment. More people in Stockton riding bikes instead of driving cars or being inactive means a place with quieter and safer roads, happier and healthier residents, and fewer harmful emissions.

That’s where you could come in. If you:

  • are a keen and competent cyclist
  • enjoy meeting and helping new people
  • can give instructions and work in a team

then you will be perfect for this role. We won’t throw you in at the deep end though, you’ll receive comprehensive training and guidance so you can confidently support the rides, and you’ll probably learn a fair bit yourself.

We have a fantastic base on the High Street with our own fleet of bikes and kit, a fully stocked workshop, and a social space for relaxing before and after the rides.

At Sustrans, you would be joining a national charitable organisation with 40 years’ experience of working with volunteers, promoting cycling, and running the National Cycle Network.

We will provide:

  • High quality ride leader/manager training
  • First aid training
  • Public liability insurance
  • Pre-planned risk assessed routes
  • Advertising and promotion
  • Any kit you need

Benefits include:

  • Meeting like-minded local people
  • Learning more about the area’s cycling routes
  • Seeing first-hand how your guidance benefits people’s health, wellbeing and enjoyment of cycling
  • Being a Sustrans volunteer gives you access to a wide network of events, training and opportunities
